Being the son of a well respected artist has to bear some kind of weight, right? Long shadows, all of that. You want to gain recognition through your merit, not your last name, right?
Charlie Martin, the son of Jason (Starflyer 59, et. al.) Martin, has some big indy shoes to fill. Jason, a prolific songwriter and producer with a devoted fanbase, and probably would not want would unfair comparisons to his son.
Charlie could have settled into the role of featured player in Starflyer 59, since he played the drums on the last full length Starflyer record. But true artists are never satisfied and want more. Charlie Martin is no different.
So what did he do? He released an EP of his own music, a fast paced 13 minute taste of what we can expect from him. Bearing little to no resemblance to his father’s music, he seems to be borrow a bit from his uncle Ronnie (the mind behind 80s synth project, Joy Electric), for the vocals, and a bit from the surf punk music of southern California.
What Charlie does with these four songs is create a path of his own, delivering tight hooks with a driving backbeat. It’s a fun record, and it makes me want to hear more.
